After making steak and ale pies, I had some ale left over and decided to bake bread with it. With added cheddar cheese, the result is a bold, Marmite-like flavour you either love or hate.

After tasting the original Bakewell Pudding in Bakewell itself (which is actually made with puff pastry), I came home inspired to make my own version — as a tart, of course. Almond, cherries and shortcrust pastry, just the way I like it, best enjoyed with a strong cup of coffee.
Baked for our Peak District road trip, this elderflower and poppyseed cake quickly became everyone’s favourite. Light, gently floral and not overly sweet, it’s the kind of homemade bake that travels well and tastes of summer.
